Indonesia has been growing rapidly over the past years in terms of both its economy and social welfare. However, there are still a number of challenges facing the population. Social enterprises work to address these social and economic issues through business solutions that create more sustainable positive impacts. A range of social enterprises with different business models and social objectives are the inspiration for Platform Usaha Sosial (PLUS) – a platform for social entrepreneurs to collaborate and build their business capacity. To mark its official launch on January 31, 2017, PLUS hosted a discussion entitled “Social Entrepreneurship for a Better Indonesia” at @america, Pacific Place.
“For social entrepreneurship, the first key factor is that there should be social impacts,” said Veronica Colondam, co-founder of PLUS and founder of Yayasan Cinta Anak Bangsa (YCAB). “Secondly, business principles must be applied. Thirdly, it has to have both an impact and sustainability.”
PLUS offers a place for social entrepreneurs to network and collaborate with the intention of creating a positive impact in Indonesia. PLUS emphasizes that working together through collaboration is essential to create greater impacts to overcome social issues.
Fajar Anugerah, Senior Partner Kinara Indonesia expressed his excitement over PLUS. “With PLUS, we all can get together virtually and find ways to collaborate across business and areas to improve the development of social entrepreneurship ecosystem in Indonesia,” he noted.
Nurturing entrepreneurs is an effective way to improve the country’s welfare. Andy F. Noya, host of the TV show “Kick Andy” said: “The birth of young entrepreneurs in Indonesia is definitely a positive trend. They are not only decreasing the nations burden of jobseekers, they are inventing jobs.” For Andy, entrepreneurs could do better if they receive the correct support as social entrepreneurs.
“The existence of PLUS is definitely a concrete support in nurturing the growth and the birth of more social entrepreneurs in Indonesia," he added.
In addition to being a platform for collaboration, PLUS is a place to develop the capacity of entrepreneurs. “We can provide them with educational content, so that the social entrepreneurs understand tools like Business Models that they might not have known in running a social enterprise,” said Irvan Kolonas, co-founder of PLUS and chief executive officer of Vasham.
PLUS is a result of collaboration between Boston Consulting Group, Indika, Yayasan Cinta Anak Bangsa, and Vasham. Throughout its journey, PLUS has received support from the Angel Investor Indonesia Network (ANGIN).
To become a member of PLUS, just register at UsahaSosial.com, then choose the appropriate role, ranging from social entrepreneur, investor, supporter or a social entrepreneurship enthusiast! After completing the registration process and being listed as a member, they will be able to meet and collaborate with hundreds of other members.
“With so many social challenges currently faced by Indonesia, we sincerely hope that PLUS could become a platform of collaboration that can bring social entrepreneurs together to overcome these social issues in Indonesia,” said Irvan Kolonas.
