Annual Kalkun Thanksgiving Day Golf Tournament
Recap of 2008 Kalkun Golf Tournament
From the Q4 2009 Edition of The Executive Exchange magazine:
AmCham Indonesia hosted the annual Kalkun (Thanksgiving Day) Golf Tournament on November 27, 2008 at the Jagorawai Golf & Country Club. The fully-booked event, once again, was an enormous success, thanks to the tournament’s sponsors, the Golf Committee, the AmCham Executive Office and the over 144 enthusiastic participants.
The official American holiday was an opportunity for members and friends to display their golf prowess on the New Course at Jagorawai and to network with the AmCham community. The four-person Texas Scramble was a welcome format, as it allowed players of different abilities to team up and rewarded team and individual play. The five-hour round began at the crack of dawn, with many arriving early to enjoy a light breakfast. All players were also given a goodie duffel bag – full of gifts from sponsors. With blue skies and calm winds, mother nature held up its end of the bargain for a perfect day of golf. As did Jaorawai with its well-kept grounds and attentive staff.
Players returned to the clubhouse and enjoyed a grand Thanksgiving buffet meal. An awards ceremony led by Arian Ardie, Mitch Good and Douglas Slusher of the Golf Committee concluded the day’s activities. The U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia and Honorary AmCham Indonesia President, Cameron Hume, offered opening remarks. Winners for dozens of prizes from the tournament’s sponsors – gifts included personal electronics, golf equipment, language courses, hotel weekend packages, round-trip airfare and much more – were drawn.
Finally, the Golf Committee presented awards to the top three teams and individual category winners for longest drives and nearest pin. This year’s winning team of Scott Bernat, Anthony King, John Lummis and William R. Rising scored a handicap net of 51.2 (gross 64), squeaking out a victory by 0.10, the slimmest of margins, over the second place team. See next page for a complete list of winners.Fifty percent of the Kaklun Tournament’s proceeds were donated to charity. This year’s recipients included Yayasan Emmanuel, an orphanage in Bogor, and Dan Roberts, a volunteer with Clowns without Borders (CWB).
Special recognition goes out to the Golf Committee for making the tournament a success: Jonathan Alan, Joe Bartlett, Mitch Good, Dennis Heffernan Jason Lawrence, Jeff Newnam, Imas Ruben, Doug Slusher and Mark Smith.
