Aceh Rebuilding

Aceh Damage after 2004 TsunamiAfter the December 2004 Tsunami in Southeast Asia, AmCham Indonesia teamed up with a number of organizations to provide disaster relief in the Aceh region of Sumatra, Indonesia.  Below are archives of our efforts.

As a result of this unfortunate natural disaster, AmCham Indonesia created, in 2008, a Chamber-level Disaster Response Plan (DRP) to leverage our vast network of members and resources for rapid assistance in the event of another natural (or man-made) disaster in Indonesia.  Please read more about the Disaster Response Plan and how your company can participate.

2006 - Aceh Relief and Rebuilding Update

On September 25, 2006, AmCham Indonesia and USAID co-hosted a luncheon with featured speaker Pak Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, director of the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Executing Agency for Aceh and Nias. The audience was educated on the devastation of the December 2004 tsunami, its immediate aftereffects, early relief efforts, and longer-term relief plans still ongoing today.

2005 - Response of AmCham Indonesia to the 2004 Tsunami

To respond to the overwhelming devastation in Aceh and North Sumatra, AmCham Indonesia is pursuing several initiatives under a newly established Disaster Relief Committee (DRC). These include:

    * Rapid supply and logistics support to USAID and NGOs in Jakarta
    * An information center to field questions and coordinate relief efforts
    * Raising a donation fund to support Aceh reconstruction and
    * Review and evaluation of projects that can be assisted by the American community via AmCham Indonesia.

AmCham Indonesia's Rapid Response

Under the leadership of DRC chairs John Jaskula and Mike McGowan, AmCham has been quickly procuring needed relief supplies and transporting them to Halim Airport outside Jakarta for airlift by C-130s to Banda Aceh. AmCham has been working with USAID and NGOs such as Save the Children to determine needs in Aceh. Then, through various AmCham members, we purchase and transport supplies to the Halim Air Force base. Many AmCham members and their colleagues have volunteered to unload trucks at the airport. This effort will likely continue for several weeks until more standardized distribution systems are established.

AmCham Indonesia Disaster Relief Committee Coordination Center

We have set up a temporary DRC coordination center within our existing office. The DRC center is intended to be a single point of contact for AmCham members and others in the American community seeking information about how they can assist, donate and coordinate their Aceh relief efforts. Volunteers will be on hand to answer phones and emails in the office on week days from 9am to 5pm.
